Day 3 of Delhi Fashion Week 2008 saw the unveiling of a new chapter in the trends of Indian fashion. The Delhi Fashion Week reached its summit on this day with a wonderful display of Indian fashion wear, men’s ethnic wear, and other items. If you have been tired of watching the same kind of saris, lehengas, and salwar kameez, then this show is a perfect treat for the eyes. Rohit Bal or the king of drapes and Designer Varun Sardana showcased their fantastic collection and the audience was left completely stunned with their collections.

As it is expected of Rohit Bal, his show was power packed and made a huge impact. All his afficionades tried to get the front row seats to have a glimpse of his collection. Thus, the front seats saw the likes of queen of beauty Shahnaz Husain, designer Vivienne Tam, Priya Chatwal, Charu Sachdev, and other celebrities. One could watch the designer of the show standing at corner and encouraging the models on the ramp.

The show started on a dramatic note. The ramp was enveloped in a layer of pink tissue paper that resembled feathers. When the lights became dim, all eyes were set on the catwalk. Slowly the music started playing and people held their breath for the unexpected. From the envelop of pink feathers, a model emerged gracefully wearing a Rohit Bal creation and stormed on the ramp.

The first outfit was a grand looking red gown, which a model carried with élan. Creativity was the highest factor that ruled the collection and the models moved on the ramp in the most elaborate of dresses and gowns. Male models too walked the ramp in well-fitted straight pants, which were puffed at the thighs and structured jackets looked adorable. The color palette was infused with shades like pastel green, red, and black. Jackets with floral embossed designs surely looked very intriguing. The vibrant shades of oranges and pinks, the extravagant ruffles, the delightful layers and the stylish collars certainly made a very bold impact.

The show of designer Varun Sardana was at it snazziest best and the collection could be described as the doll collection. The models on the ramp were dressed as dolls, while the background was filled balloons and nursery rhythms. The collection boasted of items like hot pants, gorgeous gowns, colorful dresses, jazzy knee length shorts, shirts with rumpled collars, and more.

The first two days at the wonderful Lakme Fashion Week were stunning with the collection of talented designers. The first day or October 20 was dramatic as Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut walked the ramp flaunting the creations of Narendra Kumar Ahmed. Later Mughda Godse also joined then to promote their forthcoming film, ‘Fashion’. Amid a lot of cheering the actor of the film, Arjan Bajwa said that “As for Nari’s clothes, they were revolutionary, as always.” Television actress, Simone Singh discovered that Narendra was very particular about the “signature style of elegant evening dresses”. She also liked the skinny pants that he showcased.

The first row was star studded and included many members of the Indian film industry. Suchitra Pillai found that the ensembles were “very young in spirit”. Special mention should made of the printed jeans and the use of lively colors. Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra caused a lot of drama with silhouettes in black and red at the Lakme Fashion Week. Actor Suneil Shetty, Perizad Zorabian, Ashish Choudhary, and others took their seats in the front row. According to Suneil Shetty, “The entire show was very classy”, and he “personally loved the men’s wear!” Singer Sharon Prabhakar also occupied the front row as well and she was there to cheer Shahzaan Padamsee, her daughter who was the showstopper for Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra.

Day two at the LFW was also starry day. Tarun Tahiliani’s show with his accessories silhouettes, and designs for Levi’s were stunning. The front row as usual was studded with celebrities, actors, and socialites. The audience applauded the charming collection of jeweled chain bustiers, wrinkled skinny jeans, denim hot pants decorated with gold coins, denim jackets adorned with Swarovski crystals, pencil skirts decked with Apsara chains, and much more. His trademark bling certainly dazzled the front row crowd

Actor Rahul Bose said, “..whatever I saw on the ramp today was impressive. I didn’t think denim was so versatile. Also, since Tarun has always done a bridal sequence in his shows, I loved the way he portrayed his bride in bleached white jeans, covered with jeweled chains and crystals, worn by actress Sonam Kapoor.” In fact, this budding actress, took the audience with surprise with her peppy walk on the ramp. Aarti Surendranath, a renowned fashionista in Mumbai said that it was very “refreshing to see a young collection in denim designed by him!” Tarun Tahiliani generally designs sarees, lehengas, and bridal wear but this event saw him emerging with fresh ideas.

The last two days at Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai were very colorful with the brilliant display of Indian and western silhouettes. One got to see an amazing collection of saris, salwar kameez, tunics, tops, jeans, and much more. On October 23 or the last day of the event, designer Babita Malkani showcased her very summery and cool collection, which was inspired by beautiful coral reefs. Her outfits in pinks, fresh blues, oranges, greens and aquamarines were magical enough to create an amazing rainbow on the ramp

The Gitanjali sponsored fashion event had several front row fashionistas who were planning to book some of the outfits for the celebrity society parties. None other than Achala Sachdev, ex-supermodel opened the show, while actress Celina Jaitley walked the ramp for the grand finale. Vidya Malvade, actress of Chak De attended the show in a resplendent creation of Babita and found the designer’s collection to be feminine and fresh. The silhouettes of this designer whether long or short, always look incredible on any women. According to Actress Geeta Basra, Babita plays with bling in a cool and sophisticated manner and her outfits never appear tacky.

The show of Vikram Phadnis was simply angelic. That was what actress Perizaad Zorabian felt. Phadnis, who is known to be the costume designer of Bollywood, showcased his collection that created a stir with its riotous colors. His collection featured harlequin-inspired gowns, dresses, mini dresses as well as skirts in multi-colored patterns, designs, and fabrics. All his outfits captivated the front row celebrities. Others who attended the show were Wendell Rodricks, Celina Jaitley, Sangeeta Bijlani, Tejaswini Kolhapuri, and others. Actress Tejaswini found the show high-on-energy, classy, as well as fabulous. The pop-art inspired dresses by Phadnis were amazing.

Day Three or October 22 was the day for the men’s wear show by Arjun Khanna. The classic clothes by Arjun used spectacular embroidery. The clothes in ice cream colors butterscotch, strawberry, vanilla, and pistachio were very refreshing.

Dev and Nil’s show was a showstopper as Sonakshi Sinha, the daughter of Shatrughan Sinha, Indian actor-turned politician, walked the ramp. A number of celebrities from Bollywood came cheer for and support the fantastic lady. The collection of Zubair Kirmani was casual, sporty, and comfortable for daily wear. That is how actor Arbaaz Khan described the collection.

Indian outfits like lehengas and other drapes may not have been common at the event but the show was a huge success for its international silhouettes.

Fashion and accessories always go hand in hand. One can never imagine making a fashion statement without the right accessories. You may be flaunting your dazzling saris or salwar kameez, but if you choose the correct accessories then you can really cause a stir. You cannot imagine a prominent fashion show in India without the use of both elegant and flamboyant accessories. If we take the instance of recent Spring Summer collection 2009 at the Lakme Fashion Week then we can have a good idea of the accessories that are in this season.

If you thought that the cummerbund is meant only for Indian outfits like lehengas and saris then you are probably mistaken. The collections of Deepika Gehani and Shantanu & Nikhil proved everyone wrong. They adorned their flowing gowns as well as trendy dresses with eye-catching cummerbunds. Day one at the fashion event also had other accessories on display. Next was Asmita Marwah’s show and she displayed cool hip belts that were worn with skirts, jumpsuits, and dresses. At the Shane and Falguni Peacock show, one got to see neon shaded footwear. It was all about punk chic with sky-high stilettos in bubble gum pink.

If you were on day two of the event then you would understand that fashion is actually not about clothes only. It was the day for gorgeous accessories. Silver maang tikkas were a rage a Pallavi Jaipur’s show. In case of the Tarun Tahiliani show, the models managed their unruly hair with glittering clips. The Gurpreet Pia Fleming show grabbed attention with very trendy shoes that had bog buckles ankle and cuffs. The Anupama Dayal show certainly did not fail to grab attention with the beautiful silver orb earrings. They were minimal yet fashionable.

Day 3 was the day for shoes and bags. You could also catch a glimpse of hats with a quirky style. The simple Mary Jane flats at day four was cool enough to add a girlish charm any dress at the shows by Meghna Agarwal and Kiran Jaisinghani. White strapped platform heels were other fashion accessories. At the Anand Bhushan show, the models wore these with knee length skirts. At the Arshiya Fakih Eappen show, gold pumps were sensational. The final day showcased mango-colored sneakers, strappy silver sandals, long tasseled earrings, and plenty of colorful and funky footwear.

You can experiment with your coolest accessories and wear them with your fashionable saris, kurtis, and any other outfits.

The much-awaited Wills India fashion week was held in the month of October in New Delhi. Bling was in and colors ran riot all through the event. It was one of the premier fashion weeks in India, which had plenty of Indian designers showcasing their creations. The designers intended to shake off the depression created by global economics through their fresh and innovative creations.

Ranna Gill, who was one of 7 designers at the event asserted that “I think you should use more bling when the situation is grim to cheer you up.” She was there to showcase the vibrant spring-summer collections on the first day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. Her nirvana-inspired line included pant suits, knitted skirts, and free-flowing kaftans. Her ensembles boasted of geometrical prints in shades such as browns, purple, turquoise, and green. The outfits looked stunning when they were teamed with bold and chunky crystal neckpieces.

In the beautiful ‘Ambrosia’ collection by Siddhartha Tytler no one could spot a trace of gloom. All his ensembles were bright and had embroidered sheeting in rich blue, orange, silver, and golden. His short dresses with prints of Japanese comic characters were also very attention grabbing. Earlier this designer had stated the fashion industry of India would be withstanding the worst of the financial meltdown because international buyers were not taking many orders.

A fresh designer who made his debut at the WIFW was Amrish Kumar, the son of couture queen Ritu Kumar. The traditional ‘Maasai’ tribes of East Africa inspired his collection. Just like his designer mother, he made an abundant use of prints, which he used innovatively on short frocks and slacks.

Another designer who displayed her collection was Sanchita who made quite a name for herself with her understated collection. Her outfits showed off metallic embellishments, which were inspired from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an architect-designer and also by the works of Jean Vendome, a famous artist. On the other hand, Surily Goel’s collection, which featured layered, one-shoulder dresses in shades such as rose pink and olive green was definitely inspired from the traditional outfits of ancient Greece. The audience who dazzled at the show wanted to take a break from watching usual Indian wear like saris, lehengas, salwar kameez, or traditional Indian bridal outfits. This show was fun and featured a lot of creativity.

The Indian capital surely grabbed the limelight for showcasing the unusual, cheerful, and stylish spring and summer collections.

September 19, 2008 saw the majestic day four of India Couture Week. It was the day when women’s designs were the center of attraction by ace designers like Anamika Khanna as well as Pallavi Jaikishan.

The original couture designers of Anamika Khanna made here stand out. The designs were unlike the usual lehengas and saris that one got to admire in the earlier three days of the fashion week. This day of HDIL India Couture Week was a perfect example of the fusion of contemporary art and modernism. The silhouettes were both straightforward as well as frank. Khanna has been using her label for four year and in this fashion event, she proved that her designs are surely showstoppers. The colors that she used in her creations were grey beige, black, and white. These were the predominant tones in her color palette this season. Her clothes features blunt cuts, high collars, puffed sleeves, and plenty of net.

Many of the outfits were teamed with nice pairs of leggings. One could find lots of zardozi work on her ensembles and the use of exquisite accessories was also brilliant. Her collection mostly had party wear, which could be worn easily, and the range in gold and black was awesome. In case of Anamika’s fashion show, the person who was the main showstopper was Indian actor Sonam Kapoor, who debuted in the film, ‘Saawariya’. This beautiful lady caused a stir, which she delicately walked on the ramp, wearing a wonderful black and silver ensemble, designed by Khanna. The dress has a brilliant display of zardozi work.

To make the show more colorful, members of the Indian film fraternity like Anil Kapoor, Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Madhur Bhandharkar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra were also seen at Anamika’s show. Anil Kapoor cheered on while his daughter Sonam sashayed on the stage. According to him, “The show was fantastic, very understated, subtle and classic.” He gave his daughter full marks for scorching the ramp.

The other designer Pallavi Jaikishan concluded the show with her stunning designs. She named her collection ‘Life is beautiful’ and her clothes were as beautiful as the theme. In her embellished ensembles, she used a lot of floral motifs. The outfits were mainly wearable and beautiful saris. She used a French backdrop and a garden to highlight her designs. Thus, there were men in tailcoats, who opened the doors for the models.

Bollywood and Indian fashion are just like two close friends who never let go of each other. Fashion gets inspired from the trends in Bollywood, thereby leading to a number of stylish creations that soar on the scale of popularity. The actors in the Indian film industry Bollywood depend on professional fashion designers and stylists for all their styling needs and their individual styles are emulated by movie and fashion buffs. Famous designers like Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla, Vikram Phadnis, Rocky S and many more are those style gurus on whom Indian actors depend on the most.

India fashion is not only a rage in the Indian market but a big hit in the international market as well. Indians are scattered across the globe and Bollywood makes its mark wherever there are Indians. People of other nationalities too find Indian fashion captivating. Thus we had in the past international celebrities sporting dazzling crystal bindis. People, who are crazy about Hindi movies, make it a point to follow all the dresses and styles that they watch on screen. So if you have seen Katrina Kaif dancing around is solid toned saris in the recent movie “Sinng is Kinng”, you too want to look as beautiful as her in similar saris.

Just a few years back we saw the movie “Veer Zaara” and loved it not only for its emotional content but for the ethereal salwar kameezes flaunted by Preity Zinta. In fact there were young girls all around wearing the white embroidered salwar kameezes that looked great on the actor. No one can deny what a rage the “Bunti aur Babli” salwar kameezes had been. Those shiny silk kurtis in vibrant shades with pointed shirt like collars were seen everywhere and one also did not miss the transparent patiala shalwars with multicolored horizontal stripes.

With every film comes a new look. For example take the latest look of Priyanka Chopra in the upcoming film “Drona”. She is shown sporting a tunic with ripped edges and leather boots. She is an actor who believes in making an impact in every movie with her look and style. A few months back she experimented with pink hair in the flick “Love Story: 2050” and will look different in her next release “Fashion”. Just like her, other actors in the film industry believe in setting new fashion trends, leaving everyone to simulate their styles.

Hindi films play a huge role in influencing Indian fashion that the common people love to follow.

On the day five, of India Couture Week on September 20, the fashion conscious crowd in Mumbai got to see a lot of the creations of Tarun Tahiliani and Varun Behl.
